Let us talk about the history for which this place has become a noted pilgrimage destination in Himachal Pradesh.

History of Baba Balak Nath (Shah-Talai)

There are many legends associated with Baba Ji. The most popular legend of Shah-Talai is that Baba Balak Nath took rest under the tree where a snake sheltered him from scorching sunshine. This miracle was witnessed by all the villagers.

Here Baba Balak Nath Ji requested Mata Ratno for a job at her place. She asked Baba Ji to take care of her cows. She was very happy with Baba Ji. She used to bring Roti (Chapati) and Lassi (made from curd and water) for him. One day, the cows he used to take care, were left for some time. Mata Ratno got angry with Baba Ji. She asked him for money in lieu of Roti and Lassi. Baba Ji dug his Chimta in the base of the tree. Magically the roti and Chapati came out of it which was served by Mata Ratno for 12 years.  After that Baba Ji left for Dhaulgiri on his peacock. So people of this village have started worship him as Hindu deity.

Inside the temple

The temple is an idol cave of Baba Ji. The temple authorities maintain the crowd of devotees in a very systematic manner. The way to the main temple goes through many narrow paths. There are two different paths side by side of which one for men and others for women. The path for men leads to the main temple known as Garbhagriha.

On the other hand the path for women leads to a platform that is at the same height that of the main temple. This is made to maintain the local ritual that women cannot enter the main temple. By standing at this platform, women can get darshans of Babaji from some distance. Before entering these rows devotees buy pooja items from the markets fall before the temple.

The accessories like belts and purse made of leather are not allowed inside the temple. So worshippers have to remove these outside temple’s premises. Devotees stand in queue and chant loud the mantras of Babaji. You can see many monkeys hopping here and there. Beware of them as they try to rob the pooja items you have. Inside the Garbhagriha, there is an idol of Baba Balak Nath Ji considered as the abode of Babaji. There is also placed the sacred Chimta of Babaji. Devotees offer ‘Rot’ made from wheat, sugar, and desi ghee. After moving further they get Prashad of Rot to eat. There is a small hall made for devotees to sit and relax. Tea is also served to the devotees here. It is a belief that childless couples are heard by Lord here. So many couples come here to get blessed with a child.
